Thanks for your time, well I am new in Linux. I am using Fedora Core 4, recently I didnt have network and sound, but thanks to the forum I have now. Well now I have another kind of problem.
When I login as a root in the first window I dont have problems using Fedora, I can use the internet browser (Mozilla or Firefox), the mail service, Real Player for Linux, various terminals, and other applications. But when I login as my user, as soon as I ilogin I begin to work with the same applications and suddenly the system HANGS UP!!!! the mouse and the sound from Real Player (internet radio) still working but I cant use the applications, because they dont work anymore, also the Real Player and the terminal are freeze, but there are sound!!!!
Also when I login as my user, I cant open the files from the CD driver, but if I login as a rroot theres no problem.
Can you try your old kernel again, to confirm that this is the problem? iirc fedora keeps the old kernel in place when upgrading; otherwise you'll find it in /var/cache/yum or some such.

This is probably a question of permissions for the cd drive(and floppy). For security reasons, ordinary userers are not allowed access to things they might boot the computer from. This would be useful in some situations, but not yours. This should fix it: open gnome-terminal: hat->system tools->terminal . Become root
[you@yourbox ~]$su - and press enter, then the root password.
Then open /etc/fstab in a text editor, jed, emacs, or what have you,
[root@yourbox ~]# jed /etc/fstab and press enter
The two lines referring to your cd and floppy probably have the owner option meaning that only the owner(root) can mount them. change the word owner to user , or, if more that one people use the computer, to users This might fix that problem. For more, read the manual
[you@yourbox ~]$ man fstab
Good luck with the others. Kurt

/dev/hdc /media/cdrom auto pamconsole,ro,exec,noauto,managed 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0
T hese two lines govern those two drives, although I think I recall having had problems with this myself at some point. I don't uderstand the managed options, I think they're fairly new, anyway, these are from one of mine, ad they work. Good luck!
