Recoverying from a hanging System

I am using Fedora 5 and Grub. My system hangs during the boot process at the:

Like in windows, how would one in linux boot into safe mode or at the GRUB screen choose different options to get to the command line and begin troubleshooting the issue?

grub allows you to boot directly to a command prompt, but its really limited. My advice is to boot knoppix or some live cd and chroot into your linux installation. Then you can have full reign of the booted linux OS.

My current thought would be that its a kernel issue. You didn't include a module or device driver that is needed and that is causing the system to hang at that moment. Best advice is to always have 2 kernels. One older kernel that is known to boot up and then newer ones as your vendor or yourself compiles them.

I can I use the first disk of Fedora?

I'm not sure if you can use Fedora's 1st disk. I don't use fedora. Knoppix will work, or any live CD
