Odd problem with the ATI driver. Fixed, just for reference

When I first got FC2, direct rendering was set 'on' with my ATI Radeon 9200se. So I was pretty happy to see that tux racer and other such graphics-rich programs were running with ease. I forgot what it was, but something compelled me to download the drivers that were up on ATI's site. After installation, Tux Racer ran as bad as it did on FC1 (which was very bad for me :P). I don't even think I knew how to configure my xorg.conf file then to run the driver it installed then. It was set to the default 'radeon' the whole time! I thought it had replaced the radeon.o file, but the package was called fglrx so that confused me more, since all the guides I read instructed to use 'fglrx' as the driver.

I reinstalled FC2 to fix it since I had tried everything else. Just for reference, does anyone know if the drivers on ATI's site are supposed to be worse than the ones that come with FC2? Also if ATI's package replaces the radeon.o file along with installing fglrx?
