no login

HILFE
bin seit zwei monaten 'neuer' Linux <FedoraCore2> user..
nach reboot kein Login mehr möglich:
::rechner bootet bis Login-GUI und bei korrekter username
und passwd -eingabe ('root' oder 'user') erscheint PopUp:
"Legitimation fehlgeschlagen";
im terminal blinkt bei gleichem Login-Versuch superkurz
auf: "Authentication Service cannot retrieve Auhentication Info!"
wasdas??
kann und superuser zugriff habe;
in der 'group' stehen zB in einigen zeilen doppelte rufzeichen anstelle
von doppelunkt oder 'x'
[userXYZ:!!:etc
dringend, bin in neuem job ..
<<total newbie>>

i'm a new linux<FedoraCore2>user since two months
<< a total newbie >>
after reboot no more login possible:
computer boots up to the GUI-login screen (no other
op-system, ==>no boot manager!) und trying correct user-
& passwd input ('root' or 'user') a popup-window tells:
"Legitimation fehlgeschlagen"; [authentication failed]
the same procedure on terminal lets itsself flash for
less than a millisecond:
"Authentication Service cannot retrieve Auhentication Info!"
entering a wrong username or passwd at GUI, the 'normal'
string ( !!no popup!! ) appears: " Login failed ...."
:::before reboot i remember the following changes ( as
'user' ): activation of smb-service, in authentication-settings
some checkboxes activated ( something with smb/nmb ??
=>not shure ) und 'user' added to the smb-group ...
[because of network-access; probably total nonsens ...]
:::have a fc-rescue-cd for mounting the fc-filesystem with
'su'-access; forex: in the group-file are some bangs at
any lines .. [userXYZ:!!:etc]
urgent, its in my new job...

-newbie need help! newbie dont want reinstall!

Ok, try hitting ctrl-alt-Fn (where n is a number of one of the function keys) to get to a console - it should then say "login:". Try the login there (not forgetting to make sure that caps lock isn't on and (if you are on a laptop) that num-lock isn't on). If it still fails, login as root: first check that the user exists and then try changing the users password.

Thanks, but just have done this advices
<Ok, try hitting ctrl-alt-Fn::
>>the same procedure (login as user or su) on terminal >>(==console)lets itsself flash the following string for
>>less than a millisecond:
>>"Authentication Service cannot retrieve Auhentication Info!"
I have done following:
<Try the login there (not forgetting to make sure that caps lock <isn't on and (if you are on a laptop)
<==no laptop
<that num-lock isn't on). If it still fails, login as root: first check <that the user exists and then try changing the users password.
i had looked to the passwd, shadow, group & gshadow files,
all exist inclusive entries if user and root and i had changed the user & root password with no effects

Ok, it may be that there are problems with that account. Create the user a new account and see if you can get into it. If that works, copy the original settings to this new account. Then, when you are happy with the new account, remove the old account.

sory, i don't understand:
<<Ok, it may be that there are problems with that account ...
?? which account ??, im speaking about two accounts...
i cannot login neither as 'userxy' (wich is list in passwd and group-file) nor as 'root'
the only possibility to boot the computer is using the FedoraCore-RescueDisc,
so when i create a new account on rescue-mode, what is about the root-account?
See the first post:
(...) trying correct user- & passwd input (==>'root' or 'user'<==) a popup-window tells:
"Legitimation fehlgeschlagen"; [authentication failed]
(...) or (...)
login as 'user' or 'root' on console shows following string for less than a millisecond:
"Authentication Service cannot retrieve Auhentication Info!"
both accounts doesn't work: root & userXY

How have you set up the keyboard? Check things like the '@' symbol and " - I often found that I had a US keymap instead of UK. You may have azerty instead of qwerty or vice versa.

thanks, I've checked this; I'm using a german keyboard and it works with the following settings:
de-latin1-nodeadkeys,
for example: the'@' symbol works, and all other special characters like '~', '*' a.s.o...
[[ sorry, but I don't understand the sentence: "(...) azerty instead of qwerty or vice versa. " ]]
actually status: ( --> see posts before )
the root-password changing has no effect and now i cannot change it for another time,
the message is : "Speicherzugriffsfehler" , i think in english it means: segmentation-fault.

>> after starting with rescue-cd and command: "linux rescue" I'm starting like :
sh-2.05# chroot /mtn/sysimage
sh-2.05# whoami
root
sh-2.05# pwd
/
sh-2.05# passwd
changing password for ueser root
Speichezugriffsfehler
sh-2.05#

Booting normally ( without cd or something else )a new problem is now, the GUI for Login cannot appear:
>> the message is:
( attempting in english:
in the last 90 seconds the display-server was shut down for 6 times.
maybe there's something wrong. Before (until?) the next Login-attempt on display :0 a break for 2 minutes will take ... )
I'm looking at the following link for help as well:
http://www.fr.linuxfromscratch.org/v...fs/shadow.html
but I'm not shure, wether it's out of tune with my problem ...
