login screen font size over 100 - can't login

I have just installed RH9.
The login screen that prompts for userid and password entry field
has font size over 100... just a single letter fills out 3rd of the screen.

I was able to log in ( as long as I didn't make any typos ) and then
the desktop font size was reasonable - around 10 or 12.
I went into setup and selected login screen not to use GUI.
Mistake!!!!!
After logging off I found the font size went even larger.... each letter takes almost half of the screen.

Any suggestions about how to recover... I did a hard reboot but login screen remains same - enormous letters.

I guess I need to stop the boot process somehow and try logging in without GUI. Is that possible? If I get to command shell then what next..
I don't like wearing the newbie hat but I got to start learning sometime.
Any hints would be appreciated. Thx. Tosh.

use kcontrol to set up the login manager font and size. Login as root and click on kcontrol from your start menu next select System Admin there you will see Login Manager select the font header then change font pick a basic font and set it at 10 or 12 points.
