lost mixer kmix

fedora c2

i was editing some file i think was /etc/makedev.d/sound
trying to get my sound card to work. After i rebooted, the icon (by my kde clock), for the Kmix program now has a red circle with X on top.

I beleave this means i dont have a configuration link to run Kmix

how do fix or install something that connects the mixer back to the system

i tried to reinstall kmix from a rpm but it says it is in conflict to multimedia

what is the easy route since i dont remember what exactly i changed. maybe just the permisions on that file. I know enough about linux to edit these files but not how to fix the things i broke.

so much for experimentation! but still more fun than windows
