Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hi Everyone,
I am a total noob. Touched Linux for the first time yesterday when I got Fedora COre 3 on four CDs and loaded it (not dual-boot) on a second-hand computer I bought just for the purpose of playing with Linux.
The system has a 10Gb HDD, CD-R, floppy drive, 196Mb of Ram (don't ask!), a sound card, on-board graphics and I had absolutely no problems loading the Personal Desktop version of Fedora Core 3. I am really happy with how fast it is too - lightening quick!
However (and it's a big one): I am having trouble with the display. I'll use the game ROBOTS as an example: when I open the game and try to move my character, I see the character in the new position, animated, with an inanimate version in the previous position. This happens over and over until there are hundreds on the screen. Similarly, when I open the text editor, I don't get a nice white page surrounded by text editing icons, but rather I get a window frame, inside of which is the same picture on my desktop - ie: the white page isn't showing, unless I type something and then highlight where I think it is, in which case it does show up.
I am using a StudioWorks 700s monitor and don't understand what the problem is because the desktop shows up beautifully when I start it up, and the splashscreen is gorgeous.
I have tried altering the resolution and number of colours to no effect.
ANY help would be appreciated!
THanks,
Jay
Umm... yes and no. Yes, when I roll the mouse over a window (the display settings window for instance) drop-down menus and buttons appear, but text doesn't and 'inanimate' objects don't appear (tabs don't appear, for instance).
If it helps, I'm using a Celeron II 400Mhz.
Thanks!
