I agree with jlacroix what gives? You would think that there would be some packages for the product before they put it out?.......I guess that's why I'm not big wig and only think of me,me,me.
I may go back to fd3 until there some packages to install.
For some reasons, I can't get Samba to work with my Windows boxes after I did a fresh installation. I have gone back to RH 9 and try do a upgrade. If not, I stick stay with RH 9.

All looks good so far, I did an "upgrade"...any probs then Ill do a fresh install....
FC rocks!
At the prompt, first type "mediacheck". This will result in an error. Then type "linux mediacheck". That will get you past the Kernel panic. You can then test the cd's or skip it. It worked for me and I've got FC4 installed now.
I have just installed FC4 with KDE (3.4.0). Everything seems to work ok, but I accidently installed the GDM, so I remove it and do a restart. Now I can't login as root? When I try I get the error "not allowed to login as root". What is that about?

Most distros don't permit logging in as root using graphical display managers. you can change this in kcontrol, if you are using KDM, but I would not recommend it. Anything you need to do as root, you can do it as a normal user, using "su" or "sudo".
Installed Fedora Core 4 on a spare Hard Drive. Installed O.K.
up2date seemed stranger than normal, and most updates did not have a GPC Key or whatever it's called.
Firestarter caused a bunch of errors on bootup and shutdown, says kernel does not support iptables, not sure Firestarter is even working.
Could not get the Nvidia 3D accelerated video drivers to work, tried both the new Version: 1.0-7664 and the old Version: 1.0-7174 drivers. How come every time they put out a new version they have to break the Nvidia drivers?
The Firestarter and the Nvidia driver problems are game busters for me, I put the Fedora Core 3 Hard Drive back in and will try again about Forth of July weekend.
EDIT:
Fedora Core 4 almost has too many new features that I don't need for a Personal workstation. Might be nice for Enterprises, but I don't need them and for me they are just bloatware. Such as:
Integrated Clustering Technology — Global File System (GFS) is an open source clustering file system that allows a cluster of Linux servers to share a common storage pool. Fedora Core 4 has integrated GFS within the system to manage your storage in an efficient way.
Built-in Virtualization — Xen is a virtual machine that can securely run multiple operating systems in their own sandboxed domains. Xen has been integrated into Fedora Core to work in a seamless fashion.
I also don't need LVM. Might be nice for a business server, but I don't need it.
I've used Red Hat/Fedora since Red Hat 8, but I think I might just scrap Fedora and install Arch. No bloatware, and optimized for i686.

Yeah, thanks, I also found that out Works for some reason.
Well, I managed to install, as I'm using FC 4 right now.
@anyone who cares to read...
I also don't have any sound I'm using an Audigy 2.
The modules are loaded, It's detected properly, and the permissions of /dev/snd /dev/snd/* /dev/dsp and /dev/audio are as they should.
checked the channels, and none were muted, sound levels are set well >0.
EDIT:
solved
Increased Volume of "Analog Mixer", "Aux" and unmuted "Audigy Digital/Analog Output Jack"

I'm using Nvidia (6800 Ultra), currently using the 1.0-7174 drivers. It works fine for me. Tried glxgears and neverball so far.

If you have selinux enabled, you need to do "setenforce 0" as root and then install the nvidia drivers.
Just installed Fedora 4, everyhting seems to work except Real Player, I removed the helix player. Down loaded RealPaler 10, when I try to install I get:
./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I have intall the leagacy support from the CD, doesnt seem to help. Any one else having problems?

Thanks reddazz, that did it. Except that the command was:
setenforce 0
you left the c out of setenforce. Since it had to do with SElinux, I figured it had to be enforce. I assume that setting enforce to off was just a temporary thing and that SElinux reverted back to the way it was upon reboot?
Now, any ideas on firestarter. Does the new Core 4 kernel not use iptables? Or does firestarter need to update their firewall? Or did I screw up installing it? I will have to look into it some more.
