FC3 error kernel 2.6.11.7

I've been trying to install a new kernel on an old cyrix box and I've been having problems with anything I have to compile here is my error after compiling the kernel

mm/shmem.c: In function 'shmem_file_setup':
mm/shmem.c: 2305: internal compiler error: segmentation fault

I have medium amount of experience with linux. I did a google search and found out what a segmentation fault is and what mmshmem.c is. I just don't know what to do about this error and why Fedora out of the box would work, but I can't compile any source code.
