I hope someone can help. I've read over tons of posts trying to find the answer for this problem and it doesn't seem like it should be so hard to solve.
Clean install of Fedora Core 2
Everything went fine except no sound.
Dual-boot system, sound is fine in WinXP.
SB Live! using snd-emu10k1
The gnome Sound Card Detection utility displays the information correctly and plays the test sound beautifully.
I've gone through the ALSA troubleshooting FAQ but it hasn't helped. None of the system event sounds (enabled) play. The test sound buttons don't play anything. The CD player acts as if it is playing the CD but there is still no sound.
In the mixer I've made sure that the sound isn't muted and the volume is up.
There is just one instance when the system plays sounds other than the detection utility -- if I choose Logout that dialog will play sounds when making selections and it plays a cut-off logging out sound. If I cancel there aren't sounds.
I also downloaded the kernel rpm mentioned in the previous post, installed without problems but it didn't fix the sound issue.
Before I reformatted the drive and installed Fedora Core I briefly had a Knoppix-based installed and the sound worked fine in that. It's frustrating because the detection utility does play the sound very well -- it seems strange that that app works and nothing else.
Just another odd thing I noticed, a couple of games, Tux Racer & Chromium (?) both had sound. The sound was fine but the games didn't play very well. Could the sound problem be some sort of interrupt conflict?
