The modem he's talking about is an internal data/fax modem with a conexant chipset (google is your freind). It came with his freind's laptop, possibly an hp, and it is
definately a winmodem. Basically it should work with the generic (non-free) conexant driver. It may work with one of free drivers for HSF or similar - maybe even the slmodem + alsa drivers.
There is a good chance that a decent driver may be available for install via YUM (FC6 right?).
However ... this may not be the case. Whatever, we need the output of the scanModem script before advising any specific course of action.

Of course - the simplest solution is just to buy an external modem and use that. Serial modems are supported out of the box in FC6, google USB modems (or use the HCL here) before you buy any.
