x1300/x1500 ati

well, I got fedora 7 running fine with all of the updates, but i can get the "desktop effects" to run. it says it is not supported. is this related to the drivers (which are non-existent on ATI's website) or is this related to the software(o/s) and compatibility with the hardware? Is anyone else having problems similar.

The desktop effects need hardware DRI.
What is your graphics card? Have you installed the correct drivers (say which ones and how)?

Note: compiz doesn't work with fglrx... ATI's driver doesn't (or didn't) support the compositing extensions. But you can get beryl working.

ATI linux support went right down the tubes after they got a contract with a certain proprietary software vendor.

NVIDIA doesn't use DRI

nvidia doesn't use DRI. I can't understand your problem with DRI. When you install nvidia it says that you should not use DRI but use GLX instead. If you wan't proper 3D acceleration you have to use the factory from nvidia. if not you get 3d in software not in hardware.

Livna makes it pretty easy to set up.

Install the proper livna rpm for your fedora distro. Then, issue either a yum install kmod-nvidia or yum install kmod-fglrx.

AIGLX support under fglrx will be incorporated at fglrx version 8.42.

You are off topic - this thread is about graphics. Try looking for a thread that is talking about fedora internet access.

You also need to provide more details. For eg...

set up network: what kind of network are you talking about?

browse contents through internet: of what? your computer? Thats a vlan or vpn setup you want to read about. A server - depends on the service. Or do you want to connect to the internet?

soundcard: what kind of soundcard? How do you know it is "not detected".

desktop effects not enabled: it comes like that. You have to enable them.

sridh06,
First, you placed your question in a wrong thread. It might be harder for you to find answers when you place question in an improper location. Second, even if you placed your question in a right location, your question is not clear. Did your system see your network card? Open a terminal, becoming the "root", and execute "system-config-network". See if there is network card present. Are you using broadband or dialup? For broadband, if your ISP uses DHCP, you simply initiates your netword card.

Actually, mickeyboa, your original post, to a mailing-list post regarding the hazards of installing proprietary driver binary "blobs" and their over-writing of critical system libraries, is still quite relevant, and true.

EDIT: In fact, the article has been given it's own permanent page on the Fedora Project Wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Xorg/..._Video_Drivers

Since the original link is to a 2006 article, I have unstickied it. The thread is now back in the normal stream and is allowed to find it's own Darwinian destiny.
