wmaker.inst and deb package

The only thing I don't like about WindowMaker is that the official doc is from version 0.2...

Anyway, WMaker faqs and howtos say you have to run a file named 'wmaker.inst' after installing. Since I don't have that file anywhere, I'm wondering if you only need to do it if you install from source. (I installed from a deb package.)

I wanted to run a menu app called genmenu, and it tells me first I need to run wmaker.inst.

Ubuntu Breezy - WMaker 0.92
Debian Sarge - WMaker 0.91

Well, on my machine (Suse) wmaker.inst is located in /usr/X11R6/Windowmaker. If you already have Windowmaker installed, try looking there.

Good luck

Yeah, that's what they all say

I don't have it there--or anywhere else--so I'm wondering if the deb package is different for some reason, or is it me. (I even uninstalled WindowMaker, using the 'mark for complete removal' option in Synaptic, then reinstalled after re-booting.)

I like how genmenu arranges stuff, and I'm too time-limited to do it manually, so I'm trying to make this work...

Determined that it's because of the deb package; found this in the wmaker changelog:
wmaker (0.12.3-0.2) unstable; urgency=low

* Fixed a serious mistake regarding wmaker.inst. Removed the script from
the package and all references to it from the program. Added another
script wmaker, and renamed the original wmaker to WindowMaker.
* Fixed entries in wmaker's configuration, to get it in sync with
whatever goes in the package, and not whatever is on my system. <g>
In the genmenu script, here is the reference to wmaker.inst:

Code:
wm_interactive()
{
	local wmrc menu

	wmrc="$HOME/GNUstep"
	menu="$HOME/GNUstep/Defaults/WMRootMenu"

	if [ ! -e "$wmrc" ]; then
		echo -e "\nUnable to find $wmrc, please run wmaker.inst to generate it!\n"
		exit 1
	fi

	if [ -e "$menu" ]; then
		yesno "$menu does already exist. Overwrite?" || exit 1
	fi

	echo -e "\nWriting Window Maker menu\n"
	wm_writemenu >$menu
I don't have experience with this kind of code; can you tell me what $HOME refers to? I see that it's not a dimensioned variable. This looks to be the key, because when the script runs it says "Unable to find root/GNUstep", and I'm not logged in as root.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

Typing "echo $HOME" should tell you that.

Debian also has its own application menu system that you can use with Window Maker (and also with other window managers) by installing the "menu" package (aptitude install menu).
