Why does X windows color depth affect font size???

I'm running Debian Sarge that I installed last week from the net install disc.

I'd like to run X in 24-bit color, but when I do, the default system font (the font which Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, etc., use for their menu bars) is larger for some reason.

Where is a color depth:font size ratio defined?

Okay. It wasn't the color depth that was changing things, it was the fact that I passed the color depth as an argument to startx (startx -- -depth 16). I guess this bypasses the arguments it would otherwise get from /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc.

machine$ cat /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp

So, it's probably the -dpi 100 line that is the culprit.

I'll test and then report the answer...
