Using Live-helper to create a custom LiveDVD

Hi Forum...

I want to create a LiveDVD with lots of packages that do not exist in repos...

Stuff that I built from source...

OpenFOAM with my own customized solvers and utilities, Tetgen, Netgen ,GMSH with OpenCascade support, BRL-CAD, Code-Aster, Salome Platform, Code Saturne, FreeMat, K3d...

some of these apps have been compiled with Intel development toolbox, icc/ifort/mkl

Mainly scientific/Engineering stuff...

How do I include all these packages in a custom Live Build...?

Select a suitable base distribution first.

Fedora, *buntu have utilities for making live/install DVD/cds/images.

opensuse has an onlinetool

On Debian, remastersys may be available

Hi Amani,

Thks for your reply...

I am considering several factors here... Stability/Reliability of packages in repos, and possibility of installing stuff that I compiled and are useful tools for engineering... yet, do not exist in repos... Overture, Dealii, Dakota, OpenFOAM...

I have tried Knoppix...

Man... it sucks... even after having installed it to a HDD in a spare Lappy I have... HW recognition was allright, system responsiveness.. ( considering it is only a 2 GB machine ) was allright too... but after having run ap-get update, and apt-get upgrade, lots of stuff could not be installed due to unsolvable dependency issues...

I am considering Fedora 12 as a base for my Live System, or Debian Squeeze...

Is it possible to add to the final build stuff that was "installed" in the build not from any repo, but just by good ol' ./configure --lots-of-options&&make&&make install... ?

I would go with Debian alexvader combined with remastersys

Basically, install a Debian squeeze minimal system.
install all pkgs you want and configure system.

Then, to make source pkgs into debian deb pkgs go by this how-to
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=38976

mostly, I just use the first few steps, and if you cant get source from debian repo I think it explains there how to setup/use a local repo.

after doina all that; clean the system of any unneeded stuff
do apt-get clean && aptitude purge
the run remastersys-backup and it will make a livecd of your system
does that help?

Hi Linus72

Thks for the hint...

I will now blast away from my old Lappy the Knoppix thing, and Install the Squeeze... update and

upgrade the thing, set up the environment ( set the required libs to build all my stuff ) and create my first Iso

for LiveSystem.

Does a Squeeze CD provide a minimal fuctioning Install, or do I have to use a Squeeze DVD...?

I think you have to use a debian squeeze net install iso/usb,etc
from here
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

or install DVD

EDIT

Also downloaded the fmw for my wifi card... firmware-iwlwifi to try this in an old Lappy I use for testing purposes...
