Question Trouble installing gcc

I'm trying to install gcc under debian. I ran
Quote:
apt-get install gcc-4.1
and there were no errors but when I tried to test it it said:
Quote:
bash: gcc: command not found
I'm not sure whats wrong.
Can someone please help me.

Is there a file named "gcc" in "/usr/bin"? If so, is "/usr/bin" in your path? To view your path
Code:
# echo $PATH

'cd /usr/bin/'
# 'ln -s gcc-4.1 gcc'
I think I have seen this before (Debian 3.?)

If the package is included in the OS install, there is a link to
/etc/alternatives and back to /usr/bin/ ???

There seems to be no 'gcc' (or link) in package 'gcc-4.1'
only /usr/bin/gcc-4.1 (and //i486-linux-gnu-gcc-4.1@)
