Trouble installing gcc

Here is a question from a complete Linux newbie.
I googled so many threads but I couldnt find the appropriate solution for my problem , when I try installing programs I got an error message saying that cc can not be found at $PATH, for that reason I try installing gcc but then I got again the similar err msg.

linux:/home/serhan # cd '/home/serhan/tmp/gcc-4.0.0'
linux:/home/serhan/tmp/gcc-4.0.0 #
linux:/home/serhan/tmp/gcc-4.0.0 # ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache

checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether ln works... yes
checking whether ln -s works... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
linux:/home/serhan/tmp/gcc-4.0.0 #

can someone pls help me what to do now? seems like I am in a loop.

ok, taking the "complete newbie" statement and running with it, you do NOT want to be compiling your own gcc. instead you need to install gcc from your distro cd's or online package management system. it may also be that there is a prebuilt package of whatever it is you want to install, so you don't really want to compile that anyway. Most likely you're using suse, mandriva of fedora, so that'd be an RPM you'd need.
