software available in dselect or apt-get

How do I go about asking that a new package be added to Debian's deslect/apt-get system?

apt has reference system (stored on your system) whereby it knows what is available for the flavour you use. By using apt-get update you bring your system up to date. To view what packages are available you can use the old dselect which is difficult to use. Some of the simpler ways of going about this is to use either aptitude or synaptic. I personally use synaptic which has a gui interface. These will show you what is available and what you have installed.

I have synaptic installed, how do I launch it? Also I don't just want to get a certain application. I want to know how to get it added to the software available on the Debian Woody cds. To that end I only made cd 1 and 2 and was wondering if Basilisk II is on one of the later cds.

Craigwd: you don't ask, you just wait for it, or go get it by upgrading to the version that carries it. Assume i'm in Woody and i want to install the wm XFCE4, i would have to dist-upgrade to Sid because at the moment, it's the only version that has it; OR go to www.apt-get.org and get a backport to Woody.
Diferent versions have diferent lists of packages, Debian has 3 versions woody, sarge, and sid.

Go to www.debian.org and do some serious reading, check the sections on 'packages', documentation/apt howto, etc

salud,
macondo

I think if all the new software is included in Sarge or Sid I may want to dist upgrade to one of them. Which one should I move to if it's my first time using Debian? I just saw a thread about some software being broken in Sid's and Sarge's apt-get. Should I be worried about this?
