where does apt-get store a software?

Hi, guys.
I'm an absolute n00be coming from BSD. There are some difference between the two OS maintaining the software were installed. So, in Ubuntu, I wondering which directories the apt-get put files in?
For example, when I "apt-get install gcc", where could I find out the gcc's files?
Another question is that can I remove the files located in /var/cache/apt/archives/ after software has been installed?

Any advice will be appreciated.
Danny.
