Run GUI Program without Desktop

Suppose I want to make a program for a touchscreen monitor under Debian, and I want just my program running - No KDE or other windows/menus or anything like a desktop PC, just buttons they click on the screen. What is the best way of programming or setting this up under Debian? Its almost like an embedded system, but it will still be standard PC hardware & I want to use a standard Debian Sarge so I can concentrate on programming the application instead of the OS.

Any pointers or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Under Windows I can do this by running a "Custom User Interface" instead of explorer.exe, but I'm not sure where to start looking under Linux. I've played with KDE's kiosk mode, but even if I lock everything out, there's still too much of KDE showing.

Thanks,
slacky

Code:
xinit /usr/bin/xterm -- :0
?

Check that the permissions are ok in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
(allowed_users)

This is not debian specific by the way.

I would also start with etch. It should be released soon.
