I dont know how to put an icon on my desktop.
For instance for amsn.
I unzipped a tar.gz file in home/user/tmp
now If I want to run amsn I have to type
./amsn in the shell.

????

If one was created.

Where is this application located?

Type:
echo $PATH and notice if the location of the files you are trying to execute are with one of the directories listed in your path. If they are, then all you have to do is type the name of the application from any directory you are in. Furthermore, depending on your choice of desktop environment/window manager some of them have a 'lauch' or 'run' dialogue box where you type the name of the application you want to launch into.

Another option, as mentioned above, is to create desktop icons. You can do a search here to find out all the ways possible for your de/wm.

There are many options, these are just going to be the most common

Cool
