Hello
During the debian installation, the system asked me some questions regarding Network, which i filled. The current situation is that I cannot connect to other windows PC with a Ethernet Card .
Ifconfig reports the following interfaces:
eth0
lo
sl0 (Serial line interface)
My linux PC only has the Ethernet card, I don´t know the meaning of the sl0 interface. Could anybody explain me it?
If I "ping" from my Windows Pc to the Address of the linux machine, the system reports no echo. Analyzing the Network traffic with Ethereal in both PCs I have seen that the Windows sends a "ARP Request" asking for the linux´s HW Address and this message arrives to the linux machine, but I think the problem is that my linux Computer does not reply to this.
On the other hand I would like to change the NEtwork configuration. Which files do I have to change? Where can I file some "Network Configuration" instructions?

Rep:
i use a realtek 8139 card and it does function with debian sarge (tersting) and SID(unstable)...
however i dont believe it is recognized in woody (stable).....i suggest you upgrade to sarge
your card will be recognized...
Hi
I think that the Card is recognized, but I am not sure of the reason why the system reports 3 interfaces if I use the command ifconfig (eth0, lo and sl0). What is sl0 (reported as Serial line interface)?
Use the command modconf as root which will bring up a menu go down the list and select network cards then select the realtek 8139 and install it ( if you have used the 2.4 kernel option i.e. Woody install bf24) If you have used the 2.2 kernel I think you are out of luck.
If you are going to use a static address then edit /etc/network/interfaces with something like this;
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
If you want to use dhcp then apt-get install dhcp and edit the same file and enter;
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
