Laptop lockup

When I boot with the power cord inserted, it will work fine, but
once I remove the power cord, it locks up. Also the laptop never
completely shuts down. I get a msg that says "Power down". At this
point, I have to actually physically hold my power button down to completely
shut down.

I read something about booting with acpi off. Don't know how to do this.

Laptop is a Dell Latitude C610.

Not sure about that particular laptop, but it sounds like ACPI isn't quite right. Check http://www.linux-laptop.net/ or the HCL on this site for any details about getting it sorted. What branch of Debian are you using too?

Try stopping the acpid daemon if running. Not sure howto in debian base distro but try this command as root. /etc/init.d/acpid stop
After the command works and says it is stopped, unplug the power cord and see if that works. If it does then you need to disable it from startup. Once again not sure on debian.

Hope this helps
Brian
