kde 3 install woody

hello,
I am trying my best to install kde3 on to a brand new debian woody distro. I have tried dselect, and aptitude. alas to no avail. for some reason the packages for kde conflict with a number of base utilities. you know like whiptail and debconf. each time I try it deletes them and inturn all of their dependent packages. some of these include apmd, baseutils, ppp, etc.. to say the least each time of attempted install has resulted in an unusable system. is there a better way to overcome the package depent problems and get kde 3 installed with my base system still intact??

thank you
wolfe

hi, sorry but I'm not a debian geek, but ...

trying to install a Woody on a coLinux I've found that this distro is somewaht bound to immobility and you'll not get from the Woody's sources more than KDE 2.x because of the "stable" branch.

anyway, if you want to install a KDE 3.x on a Woody distro you have to use the so called "backports"

as I've read, backports may be hazardous to the health of your Debian installation, the source where you'll get all unofficial packages is : www.apt-get.org

the best way to get a KDE 3.x on your Debian is to upgrade to Sarge
