debian.org still lists kde and kde-core as 3.1.2. dpkg --status kde says it's verision 3.1.2.

but when i open the control center, it says it is 3.2.2 (and the splash screen says kde 3.2)

anyone know why?

I use SID, unstable is SID right? It lists kdelibs as 3.2.2 and kdebase as 3.2.2 so i just upgraded arts and those packages and now I'm using kde 3.2.2 and I like it.

"Package kdebase

unstable (kde): KDE Base metapackage
4:3.2.2-1: alpha arm hppa hurd-i386 i386 ia64 m68k mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc "

KDE 3.2.2 is nice looking and his nifty features like a little icon of the program that is starting up and an intriguing start menu.

ran apt-get dist-upgrade, everything was up to date. Did a reboot. Ran startkde and this is what I get:
xset: unable to open display
xsetroot: unable to open display
startkde: Starting up...
startkde: Running kpersonalizer...
kwin: cannot connect to x server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to x server
This last line just keeps going until I do a Ctrl+c. Any ideas?

Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log 1st to see if there is a problem with X. Then have a look at /var/log/kdm.log. have you tried going in as root?

sometimes debian doesn't install xserver-xfree86, make sure that is installed as well.

I am logged in as root. Is there something in particular that I'm looking for in those log files? As far as xserver-xfree86, that is the installed and up to date.

The log files should tell you what's happening and why you cannot get it working. Can you get on to the KDE desktop as root?

I do everything as root. It just makes like easy, especially for newbies like me. But to answer your question, no, KDE won't run as root. Should I try to log in as a regular user to see if the KDE desktop starts?

That is really a dangerous thing to do especially on the internet. Learn to use your consol. If you need to do things bring up a consol and log in as root and do whatever you need to do. If KDE won't work as root it won't work as a user either.

Thanks for the advice. I'll start to use the consul. After looking through the XFree86.0.log and it shows these entries on the last few lines:
(EE) I810(0): No video BIOS modes for chosen depth
(II) Unloadmodule: "i810"
(II) Unloadmodule: "ddc"
(II) Unloadmodule: "int10"
(II) Unloadmodule: "int10"
(II) Unloadmodule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(II) Unloadmodule: "vbe"
(II)Unloadmodule: "int10"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error:
no screens found.

Is there something that needs to be reconfigured?
