Wink Dual Boot win XP with Deb 6 already installed

Hello all,

Could anyone point me at an article which describes how to provide dual boot win xp/ Deb 6. I have Deb 6 installed and I see a GRUB line when it boots, so I guess I'll need to modify GRUB.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks
Paul

You will need to clarify a little first. Do you have xp AND Debian installed and can only boot Debian? or are you planning to install xp after Debian has already been installed. Are you able to boot Debian? What does this "grub line" say? If you had xp installed when you installed Debian, Debians bootloader should have detected the xp install. You need to be more specific on your currrent situation.

I assume he is already on debian but no xp.
So... after installing xp, the windows bootloader will take grub's place in the mbr of the drive, so you will have to restore grub to get back to the debian installation and run update-grub so as to make the extra entries in the grub menu. Simple :P

Smile More detail

Thanks for your help - I should 've put more detail, here goes

I have deb 6 installed and working one one drive. I have another drive which I use for data.

I now want to install WIN XP on a third drive so eventually there will be 3 hard drives.

When the system boots I would like to be able to choose which OS

Thanks again,
Paul

Piece of cake. LOL

What I would do is disconnect the two drives you use for Debian connect the third drive in the location and on the cable it will stay. PATA either Master or slave or SATA any open slot. Then install Window$ after that reconnect the other two drives boot into your BIO and if it will let you chose which drive to book select your Debian drive. once in Debian as root run update-grub, you may have to mount the Window$ disk for grub to see it and add it to your boot menu.

In case 62chevy suggestion didn't work

Try to add this manually to /boot/grub/menu.lst

Code:
title Windows
        map (hd0) (hd2)
        map (hd2) (hd0)
        root (hd2,0)
        makeactive
        chainloader +1
Where your windows installation are at the last drive
