debian install fail
Hi! Trying to install debian testing.. But the install failes when it gets to "Installing base system" Tailing the syslog only gives me an error saying that the dependencies/packages could not be found.. Doing an cd install, not the net installer! When it gets here, the cdrom just spins down, like it is not needed anymore.. Don't know if that is right, but seems like the installer can't get the files from the cd, or where it tries to get it from.. Installing into /target/ failed it says! Tried netinstall, same error, only an another package.. Burned the cd a couple of times using different writespeeds.. Would not help.. Installs any other os great on this machine, so don't think there is a hardwareproblem, like the cdrom or something..
Sorry for my bad english, but I need som help on thisone!
Isn't there any way of force the cdrom to mount using the shell? Maybe I am on the wrong track, but please help!
Trying to download unstable (sid) now, to see if that failes to!!
Thanks in advance..

Have you tried using the Debian Sarge (3.1) CDs? They should Install with no issue.
You may have more luck using the Sarge CD1 to install the Base System. Once you have Internet Access, you can then simply change the entries in /etc/apt/sources.list to point to "testing" instead of "stable" & run
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
If you only install the minimum of Sarge Packages, the upgrade should be quite smooth.
Once that's all done, you can upgrade your Kernel to something more recent using apt. The default kernel in Sarge should get you started, however.

Trying to dowload sarge now.. Just that I dont have an internet connection aviable on the machine I would like to install debian on.. Therefore I need the cds.. But, when other distros installs fine, why can't I just download testing cds and install these, without a internet connection?

You can download iso's of daily testing and unstable builds..
http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/ # scroll to bottom of page for testing and unstable mirrors.
I just use the Debian netinstall iso (100MB) then at the boot: prompt type
linux26 expert as part of the install process it asks which version of debian you wish to install: Stable, unstable, or testing.
I think the problem you are running into with your CD based install is that the CD's contain the packages for Stable but not testing or unstable. you will either need to do a net install or download the daily build iso's of testing or unstable that I provided the link for above..

Tried netinstall now, gets a little further, but fails in installing base system, at initrd-tools that is!

I have a feeling (Could be extremely wrong here) that the Debian Installer is being worked on & currently has some outstanding bugs as they work towards the next release. This may be causing your grief if you are using a Testing CD to install with.
If you use the Netinstall CD, then you would need an Internet connection on the machine you wish to Install Debian on to complete the install.
How about this for a compromise if you definitely want to run testing from the start:
Download Sarge CD1 - Use this for install of the base system.
Download the first 5 Testing CDs from
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/weekly/i386/
(I take it this is a regular x86 machine)
This should be enough to give you a complete system with well-known packages.
You can use these to upgrade your system.
Sarge should, after install ask you to reboot, where you can configure everything else. Install nothing but the base system. You will end up at a standard Console.
As root, run apt-config. It will ask how you want APT to install software. Make it look at your CD-ROM drive.
Insert each CD as prompted to let APT see all your Testing CDs.
Once complete. Run "apt-get dist-upgrade" & see what happens.
Once that's done, reboot your machine to make sure it starts up OK & gives you a Console prompt again. You are now running Testing.
Start installing any extra software you need. Running "apt-get install x-window-system" will allow you to use a Graphical Desktop.
Running "apt-get install gnome" will give you the GNOME Desktop.
You may also need to run "apt-get install gdm" to give you a Gnome-based Login Prompt.
I'm sure there's an easier way. I'll be honest, running Debian Sarge on my home system is current enough for me & I know it works. You could try just downloading the first 5 Sarge CDs, Install in the regular manner & upgrade when you are happy with the way Debian works on your system.
Hope this helps.

In other words: the
testing installer images aren't really in a usable condition at the moment being.
Either use the
stable 'sarge', 3.1r0 installer images, or try the
unstable 'sid' images.
