How to change some stuff

Okay, I'm running Damn Small Linux from my CD-ROM. Pretty different looking desktop. Could someone show me how to change some things? For instance, can I change the mouse cursors to something else? I've always hated that small icon of a wristwatch next to the arrow. That I'd like to get rid of. And there is no Start button, and no icons on the taskbar. Is this the way it's supposed to be? Is there a way to put a Start button down there along with some icons?

DSL is designed to be light and effiecient so they use fluxbox as their default window manager. It is less resource intensive but does not contain all of the eye candy that Gnome and KDE have. What version of DSL are you running? If you are running 2.0 or newer you should be able to switch to jwm (joes window manager). If my memory serves me correct right click to open menu than under Window Manager there should be an option to switch to jwm (you can always switch back by doing the same in jwm). This window manager has a 'start button' and may be more comfortable to you.

yeah, fluxbox is a window manager, not a desktop environment. if you're looking for something more "windows" then i'd try a different live cd. perhaps knoppix, kubuntu, or mepis

If you need something minimal, you might like Puppy Linux; it's a nice distro looking a lot like WinDoze, but it's truely Linux. I like DSL better for its toolbox character, but Puppy is impressively complete for such a compact desktop distribution.
