hplip error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12)

I have a wireless networked HP printer and was getting this error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12). I ran hp-check, hp-setup, hp-plugin, etc. After a few days' worth of frustration, I've figured it out.

The key was this: http://hplipopensource.com/node/216
So after running
Code:
snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 ip.address.of.printer 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0
I got this message: Timeout: No Response from ip.address.of.printer

Then I remembered...

Linksys WMP600N wireless N ethernet card in Linux...it does work

Update: with kernel 3.9.11 I've had good luck with rt2800pci (driver in the Linux kernel) instead of Broadcom's rt2860sta driver. I can also connect to 5GHz networks with this driver.

If you can't/don't want to update your kernel to a later version, here are your options:...

Lirc .9 with Media Center Edition (MCE) Transceiver in kernel 3.3.4

Hello, I'm writing this to help out anyone who has wasted days trying to get their MCE remote or Media Center Edition Transceiver working with a newer kernel (3.3.4) and new Lirc (.9). As you may know, mceusb was once built into lirc but now it is in the mainline kernel and there's very little documentation-wise to help us figure it out. Here are the steps to get it working in the new environment (this is for Gentoo but other distros should be similar):
  • Kernel configuration. Under Device Drivers->Multimedia
