Put your money where your mouth is...

Posted 06-25-2009 at 11:27 PM by Shingoshi

I'm not preaching to anyone here. I'm simply opening a discussion about the extent we each personally invest in the privilege of running Linux.

Due to the fact that I overclock my processor (although mildly), I am the member of a number of forums dedicated to the quest for ever higher performance from the processors we (overclockers) run. And the one thing that I personally admire about many of those users, is the amount of (large sums of) money they tend to invest in their machines. No matter how bad the economy may be, they'll shell out whatever it takes to maintain the level of performance required to function at their expected levels (mostly as gamers).

I even found one instance where someone is at least as crazy as I am.

He too built a massive system using the same Tyan S4989 board as I intend to use. What's crazy about it, is that he also liquid-cooled his system. He started his system from virgin territory. I however already had a functioning liquid-cooled (LC) system in place before. So while he had to start from scratch, I simply needed to drop my LC system on my new board. My LC system already has a complete closed-loop for all four processors in place.

The thing is, it seems that many of the people I've communicated in the Linux community either have or would never consider some of the options very commonly used by gamers. So are gamers the only one's who have fun. I'm not a gamer. Far from it. And I do occasionally come across others who use their overclocked systems for things other than gaming. But the one thing I rarely ever see are Linux users among the aggressive system builders. And I'm just curious, why?

What is it about the general thinking of Linux users that tends to exclude them from the set of high-end system builders commonly found among M$ users? Linux users boast of their knowledge of the actual software running the computer. But system's hardware seems to be completely off the scope of their radar.

I'd like to know if there should be a subforum dedicated to the apparently very few users like me, who overclock and or run fairly exotic machines. I think in terms of being exotic, a liquid-cooled four processor system is at the top of the food chain. But there have to be others with more domestic builds than mine. It would be nice to have a place to discuss things like this in a place dedicated to Linux. Because there are so few Linux users comparatively speaking, that in all of my posts elsewhere, I seldom come across other Linux users.

It would just be nice to have a sense of family among those who pursue extreme measures. Kind of like the Final Frontier...
