A new quest...

My company currently runs an IceWarp (used to be called Merak) mail server. I am looking to change this. One of the biggest disadvantages of the IceWarp mail server is the lag experienced when users have a few hundred messages in their inbox--or any other folder for that matter. I am looking for a mail server which is integrated with a database so that folder listings will be more responsive.
After a little research on Zimbra, Citadel, Courier, Cyrus and Dovecot, conducted about 6 months ago, I have narrowed the field down to Cyrus and Dovecot.
I am still on the fence as to whether I will use Postfix or Exim for the MTA.
My users want a relatively sophisticated groupware suite. I still have to do some investigation here. I have looked briefly at Squirrel Mail, Horde, Round Cube, and some of the more generic php groupware suites. The groupware is something that I intend to revisit once I get the MTA and e-mail server (with database) figured out.
First and foremost is selecting the distro to run on though. I am most experienced with Debian servers and the Debian experience has treated me well. However, I have had some good experiences with virtual appliances on CEntOS and have some interest in becoming more familiar with its inner workings.
I am planning to lead off with CEntOS 5.2. If it installs on the test server I have (a Dell PowerEdge 800) without too much trouble I will go with CEntOS.
