kde + xgl [SOLVED]

Ok, I thought I would have a stab at getting this up and running. I downloaded the xgl-abs-overlay from Miko's PKGBuilds and started building/installing the packages in the order as outlined in the wiki. However, when it comes to building the mesa-xgl-cvs package, I receive this error:

Code:
make[3]: *** [clientattrib.o] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/abs/local/mesa-xgl-cvs/src/Mesa-build/src/glx/x11'
make[2]: *** [subdirs] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/abs/local/mesa-xgl-cvs/src/Mesa-build/src'
make[1]: *** [default] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/abs/local/mesa-xgl-cvs/src/Mesa-build'
make: *** [linux-dri-x86] Error 2
==> ERROR: Build Failed.  Aborting...
Fair enough. I then installed the prebuilt binaries from the shadowhand repository. So far, so good.

However, when I drop outta x and run 'startxgl 0 kde nvidia' I just get a blue screen - which I can rotate - but no *desktop*. Whilst running the above whilst in X, I have my desktop and can use the effects, but the desktop is completely non-functional, e.g windows have no title bars; cant browse the net and text in xmms is non-readable. Basically, its non-useable.

As is evident, I am at a loss here so I thought I would ask the knowledgable folk here at LQ. Have I missed something glaringly obvious? All advice aimed at a 5-year old gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Edit - Typos.

I had another stab at this today and have made some more progress ...

I added an option for kde in the startup script in /usr/bin/startxgl. I edited /etc/pacman.conf and told it to ignore fixesproto after reading the Arch forum, thereby allowing me to update xgl-cvs. It now looks as though it should look, eg windows start bouncing around when its bootin etc. Lol.

However, I still dont have any borders on the windows which means I cant close/move stuff. Text is still garbled in xmms. I havent played that much so probably more problems I havent noticed. I *think* I have all the plugins enabled but will keep trying tomorrow. It's late and bed is calling!

Thought i'd write an update...

kde + xgl [SOLVED]

Finally have this up and running after another try yesterday.

The reason it was so sluggish was due to not having rendering enabled via xorg; also changed default depth to 24 (as opposed to 16).

This time, rather than using the package builds, I went to shadowhand's site and downloaded the tar.gz files and installed them individually using pacman -A <name>. If there were any dependency issues then I installed them via pacman and continued as normal. Im not sure if that was the *magic* fix, but I now have window borders and everything functions as it should do.

I must say it's all rather responsive considering the effects that there are. In all honesty I will most probably get bored of it after a week but at least its up and running and there If I want it.

I hope this helps anyone else who is struggling to get this up and running.
