I have tried all packages installed without problems on 10.0 OSS except from compiz for which I get:
error: Failed dependencies:
libexpat.so.1 is needed by compiz-0.0.2-3
I have expat installed and libexpat.so.0 I am trying to find libexpat.so.1 but with no luck. Any suggestions?

Same here, but on SuSE 10.0 Pro... all the packages are there, no depedency problems... no luck either!

Parallel I've got a SuSE 10.1 Beta 3 install, Xgl works perfectly there! And... wow!

Guess we've got to wait just a little longer.

simply make symlink
ln -s libexpat.so.0 to libexpat.so.1

any chance of seeing it on red hat soon ? meaning, the installation is through source right, so can it work on other distros also ??

Source can be installed regardless of distro. So lond as you meet all requirements, you are fine. Okay, I have to say I tried to do it the "easy" way by installing SuSE 10.1 beta 4, with no success. I may try later doing a full SuSE 10 reinstall then upgrade my way there, but that is just a big pain knowing I will be installing 10.1 when it comes out.

For some weird reason linking libexpat.so.0 to libexpat.so.1 doesn't work for me. I still get the same error. But I installed all other rpms (xgl,libsvg, libdrm) from the instructions (and I finally have 3d acceleration... That's nice for me!

I tried the Xgl live cd thats out there. It some distro that comes w/ Xgl already. Its not as big as everyone makes it out to be. Its fancy compared to anything windows does. It sorta brings Linux more to the Mac side of things (fancier). Its kewl to do the shift-alt-left arrow to switch desktops all fancy.

I personally like SuperKaramba w/ the widgets a bit better, adds more features w/ eye pleasing items. Xgl only seems to add eye pleasing features but no real benefit for productivity. If anyone knows of productivity benefits of Xgl let me know.

I tried out the Kororaa live CD but couldn't get the desktop to load so I did some research and found out my video card (ATI Radeon 9200SE) is not yet supported. I'd like to give it a try though, preferably using a live CD once my card is supported.

Well, I just looked some more and turns out Kororaa have released their second version of the live CD, so maybe I will give that a try. I also read somewhere that people got XGL working with the radeon 9200, we'll see what happens.

Also tried Kororaa and older nvidia video not supported.

I have it fully working on Suse 10.0 installed fine, only problem I have is that I can't get compiz to load at boot. So I have made a script to run it. If I run the script at boot it doesn't work for some reason. Its fun tho, the cube is very nice but by far the best feature IMHO is called scale I think, and is the one that lets you see all the open windows on the desktop at once. Mac had the idea first I think, but its nice to have it on linux.

I got it working with Version .2 of the Kororaa live CD yesterday with my Radeon 9200SE by following these instructions: http://kororaa.org/forums/viewtopic....17f3f2fc7729c2 by chris. So for anyone else out there with a Radeon 9200 video card that is wanting to try the live CD and can't get it to work, try that. The first command mkxf86config, said not found when I tried to run it, so I'm not sure about that, but it loaded. Oh yea, I think you have to use KDE also. This works for the kororaa live CD, not necessarily for a regular install, but it might, I'm not sure.

I got this working on suse 10 make sure u follow that opensuse tutorial its got the the little notes about whats needed for suse 10 versus 10.1. and there are a few xtra packages for suse 10 to be installed that are litsted on that page .I have noticed a few tutorials out there and I sort of used a combination of them. I did not make that symlink however and I didnt bother with suseconfig as the open suse tutorial stated to alter kdrmc instead(for suse 10 not 10.1)

The biggest problem I faced was that I use KDE and on loading the desktop I lost my system icons such as the trash icon etc.Some icons were changed to gnome style (I have beagle installed and so I guess I have some gnome dependcies installed and compiz must have used those for the icons?). also my backround(I use the changing desktop option) wasnt working instead I had some other backround.Also the pager consisted of one desktop only and there was no way to changed it.I have googled a bit and found other distros are making headway on these kde problems. I couldnt find any solutions/patches for suse though does anybody know of any or did anybody get kde working a little better in Xgl.

Things to mention- Quake 4 did not work in Xgl nor did I expect it to. Most likely most 3d accel wont work and you should probably be shutting down kde or gnome and starting an xserver specifically for the game to get the most out of your machine anyway.

As for the productivity question somebody raised. First and foremost why do people drive Ferraris etc I can say that when I showed the video demo of Xgl to my techie friends there was cumultive gasp then silence followed immediately by questions about availabilty for Windows

On the more practical side the true transparency of several windows with very little performance penalty is supposed to be quite useful. Holding the cube on a corner - see two desktops at once for people with short memory spans. Zoom in with just a key click and your mouse scroll button on the security video of your little brother trying to hack your system, just how close is he to hacking your system. Wobbly windows ....er uhmm the wobbly windows become incredibly straight after several wobblie pops (my preference is rum and coke) and all is right with the world

Oh ya again can somebody throw me a bone with this kde and xgl/compiz problem TIA
