I am a complete newbie, and I have read alot of documentation and alot of newsgroup post, but i cant find what Im looking for. I cannot configure my machine properly to connect to the internet. I have a realtek 8139 and a davicom dm910x/dm980x and i connect through a cable modem. I added the modules 8139too and dmfe to the rc.conf and the lines alias etho dmfe, and alias eth1 8139too to the modules.conf files, and i am unsure what else i have to do.
another question i have, is there a way to view the information from the boot screen, i see [failed] sometimes, and what apear to be error messages, but it goes by way too fast to read?
if anyone can help me or point me to the right information that would be great.
oh one more thing, i added slocate::13: to /etc/group but i get a warning message when i run updatedb "warning: updatedb: could not open database: /var/lib/slocate/slocate.db" did i miss something?
Your first problem is you have two net cards (I guess the Davicom is a network card... or it isn't ?), which "automagically" turn your linux computer into a router.... AND YOU DON'T KNOW how to configure a router, don't you ?
So, easy one: disable (or pull off) one of the cards. I know the RealTek works OK with linux, so pull of the davicom . (If the davicom has something to do with the cablemodem, please forget about all this bullshit)
After pulling off, try again.
For the boot messages try:
dmesg | more
Or edit /var/log/messages & /var/log/boot.*
The third question (could not oopen....)
Are you logged in as root or as a normal user ?
(Sure you'll need to be root)
thanks for replying,
the realtek is built in to my motherboard, but i want to connect my laptop to the davicom card, anyway i will try this later and let you know what happens.
