Unhappy internet connection problems

I'm running Manrake 10.1 official and KDE 4.3.

Let me say first of all that I've followed the how to on this and it don't work for me missus!

This is really annoying - I got my internet connection set up fine (cross over cable from my HP lappy to my windows based main pc - and could surf quite happily - however for whatever reason whilst my lan connection is up and running I can't access the internet (using firefox, konqueror or mozilla).

Here's what I've done so far: deleted the ethernet card connection - restarted lappy and readded the connection - choosing auto config where relevant, checked the ip address all appears to be ok.

Now - when I could surf ok at boot up the sequence halted whilst it went to detect the pc ethernet card and invariably came up as FAILED - once I got to the KDE desktop I had an icon that indicated I needed to connecte, naturally I chose the connect eth0 from the icon menu and off I went - of course now I've lost that icon which I guess refreshed the lan connection.

I think I need to clear all the ip related information via the konsole - but it's not like windows (doh!) so I don't know the commands.

Any help gratefull received...

You have two network cards? One to Lan, and one to Internet via windows PC? I think that's what you're saying.

If so there's a good chance your LAN connection is being brought up first and being set as the default gateway sending internet bound traffic into oblivion. The shell command

will show you what your default gateway is. Also try

to see if it's just a DNS problem (but I doubt it). Are the IP addresses on each interface in the same subnet/range (which you don't want to do)?

When you have your internet connecton working you could simply take a note of the network card settngsand assign that ip address as static and manually enter your DNS servers into
your mandrake network card configuration screen and default gateway, you'll find the dns server ip addresses in /etc/resolv.conf whilst your internet connection is active.

Another alternative is to use the route command to specify your default gateway and what interface card to go out to reach your lan.

If you do

man route

it'll show you information and examples to use.

I don't use mandrake so can't be of much help when it comes to the graphical configuration stuff.
