Question AmigoXP + DialUp = Way Beyond FOOBAR

Hi Guys

After piddling around for three days, figured it's time to ask for help (guidance, assistance, meds [?]). Install for AmigoXP was flawless, first time it ran, it ran nice and found everything ***except*** my sound card (ESS Allegra, uses the Maestro3 driver, but you gotta hand gimmick it and I haven't bothered to do that yet). The current major insanity is getting ***any** kind of dialup to work. The old PPP is ***missing***, when I try and install one I get error messages about the kernel not supporting PPP. When I try and mess with ISP-040111, I get a missing PPPD error.

Anybody know how to fix this so I can get AmigoXP online?

Thanks,

Mike (pacranch)

Try this:
Open an xterm and type 'ispsetup' and enter the info for your isp. then run ppp-on and see if that works. Try it as root first -just be sure to disconnect right away and then try again as another user.
I included the ISP-040111 as an alternative -but the connect script may need to be changed.
Part of the problem may be that there are several connection utilities installed -pppsetup, yawmppp, kppp and xisp (at least). The installation of one overwrites some files of the other. Most of these generate new scripts anyway, when you run them.

Unhappy Eek

Tried 'em all and no joy. pppsetup looks like it's gonna be OK, but dies with a no ppp support error and suggest maybe getting the ppp module. yawmppp doesn't load at all. kppp acts OK initially, but dies with a pppd daemon error (unexpected death [?]). xisp seems OK, but won't hold the phone number. I'm now on Day Four of what took me five minutes in Amigo 2.

Eek,

what do yo mean xisp won't hold the number?

based in the errors from the other programs i think the problem might be with your modem not being correctly picked up by the system...

What I meant by "not holding the number" is that I type the number into the correct panel during Xisp's configuration setup, but when it comes time to use Xisp, it gives me a "no number" error, hence it does ***not*** hold the number. I'm fairly sure that the system is finding the modem correctly, KPPP actually will dial out, it just dies on a PPPD Daemon error, which is also the case (PPPD missing error) that other dialups mention. There really does seem to be something off in PPP and PPPD in AmigoXP.

To test that theory, I uninstalled AmigoXP, deleted all its files, then reinstalled both AmigoXP ***and*** Amigo2. I only attempted to use PPPSetUp. AmigoXP died in nojoy with the now familiar error about PPP support being lacking and PPPD is an unknown command. Amigo2 had me online in 90 seconds.

As a further idea on the "modem not being correctly picked up by the system" theory, AmigoXP actually correctly identified my modem by Manufacturer and brand, so methinks it ***is*** being picked up by the system.

Welcoming any ***real*** help,

Mike (pacranch)

PS: Because enquiring minds want to know, here's the PPP error:

"/usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or PPP was not included in the kernel configuratin. If PPP was included as a module, try '/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that fails, check that ppp.o exists in /lib/modules'uname -r'/net. See README.linux file in the ppp distribution for more details."

Needless to say, '/sbin/modprobe -v ppp' fails on a no file, no dir error and ppp.o does ***not*** exist.

The problem apparently stems from a conflict with ISDN support. there is a ppp_generic module.
You'll need this patch for the kernel:
http://www.plumlocosoft.com/kernel/p....1.6b.diff.bz2

After patching, copy the config file from /boot into /usr/src/linux. Use the 2.4.29-5a config file and rename it to .config.
The run make menuconfig and turn off all isdn support and syncronous transfer mode. Careful with what you remove ramdisk, framebuffer and file system support are all needed
I'll get you a modified one ready soon if you don't have good luck

Place inside the unpacked kernel source. Unpack by dropping it on Archive. Then open an xterm there (right-click on ROX-Filer background and choose Window>>OpenXterm Here) and type this:
patch -p1 < *.diff

Here you'll find a package with new kernel and modules:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...hes/2.4.29-10/

This should fix the ppp problem -it did on my machine anyway. Please let me know if it doesn't work for you.
