What I meant by "not holding the number" is that I type the number into the correct panel during Xisp's configuration setup, but when it comes time to use Xisp, it gives me a "no number" error, hence it does ***not*** hold the number. I'm fairly sure that the system is finding the modem correctly, KPPP actually will dial out, it just dies on a PPPD Daemon error, which is also the case (PPPD missing error) that other dialups mention. There really does seem to be something off in PPP and PPPD in AmigoXP.
To test that theory, I uninstalled AmigoXP, deleted all its files, then reinstalled both AmigoXP ***and*** Amigo2. I only attempted to use PPPSetUp. AmigoXP died in nojoy with the now familiar error about PPP support being lacking and PPPD is an unknown command. Amigo2 had me online in 90 seconds.
As a further idea on the "modem not being correctly picked up by the system" theory, AmigoXP actually correctly identified my modem by Manufacturer and brand, so methinks it ***is*** being picked up by the system.
Welcoming any ***real*** help,
Mike (pacranch)
PS: Because enquiring minds want to know, here's the PPP error:
"/usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or PPP was not included in the kernel configuratin. If PPP was included as a module, try '/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that fails, check that ppp.o exists in /lib/modules'uname -r'/net. See README.linux file in the ppp distribution for more details."
Needless to say, '/sbin/modprobe -v ppp' fails on a no file, no dir error and ppp.o does ***not*** exist.
