X.org stuck at 640x480 on Via KM400A

I just installed FreeBSD 5.3 on a system with an Asus K7400-MX, 256 MB ram, 1.33 Thunderbird, with Via's KM400A integrated graphics. I ran xorgcfg, and set up the config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I chose the KM400 chipset and "via" driver, and to have a 800x600 res. Despite this, when I start kdm, I always get a 640x480 resoultion, and KDE's control center won't allow me to change it.

The only ponential problem I can see here is the driver is listed for KM400, without the "A". If I choose other drivers, such as vga or vesa, X won't even start. What am I doing wrong?? Please help.

I had the same problem. you could only select between 640x480 and (EGAD) 320x240.

here is what you do:

[/B]
for some reason, you can't get higher resolutions unless those two settings above (commented out) are set. I presume those are what xorg detected for your monitor. (i didn't even know there was an auto config thing... i had to figure them out manually.)

try uncommenting HorizSync and VertRefresh, pray that your monitor doesn't blow up*, and try starting X.

*(it won't really blow up, but you can screw up a monitor if those are set wrong. they look like pretty conservative values, so IMO you should be safe.)

Thanks - DDC was the problem.

To get it to work I also had to add:
Option "NoDDCValue" "yes"

to the config file. Apparently the via driver ignores the monitor section unless it sees this parameter.
