Hello
Since I installed freebsd on my laptop I got a trouble with a user which is known as "unknown".
That is to say: the filer I use open on /root instead of /home/gnux and the user gnux never receive any mail from mailer-daemon. root receives return recipient with those "user unkown".
I checked /etc/passwd, the user is in it. The w command output is:
11:54AM up 4:43, 3 users, load averages: 0.16, 0.03, 0.03
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE WHAT
root v0 - 7:13AM 4:41 xinit /home/gnux/.xini
gnux p0 :0.0 7:21AM 33 irssi
Certainly something is missing but I don't know which files identify the users for the system...
Does anyone got a clue?
Thx
What is it that you are trying to do? If root is getting mail from the mailer-daemon saying "user unknown", it's probably because something tried to send mail to a local user that doesn't exist. User information is stored in /etc/password and friends, but I don't think that's what the problem is. Please explain again in more detail what you are trying to do, what you expect should happen, and what is actually happening.
Hello
Thx for the answer. My problem appears when I sent an email: the user appears as unknown while he is stored in /etc/passwd and got a right id (afaik):
$ id
uid=1001(gnux) gid=0(wheel) groups=0(wheel)
Others problems appear: when I open Midnight commander or Mutt or Gnus it opens on the root directory instead of the current directory of my user (/home/gnux)
Personnally I just want that it stops: I would prefer opening Midnight Commander, Mutt or Gnus on the current directory of my user instead of the current directory of the root...
It's really strange and confusing: I made a test on the root directory thx to chmod. I first try to open Gnus with those rights: drwx------ it did not work then I try: drwxr-x--- and it works...Because gnux is member of the wheel group
Is it a misconfiguration or should I change all the settings of those applications?
So you send mail from root to 'gnux@localhost' and the mailer daemon bounces it back saying "unknown user"? That's strange. It sounds kind of far-fetched, but maybe your mail is being routed through an outside host? Or it could be that the configuration for the gnux user is somehow screwed up. How did you add your user? Did you do it via `adduser`?
The other problem could be an environment issue, or it may also point to user misconfiguration. Check from your shell (whatever that may be) that variables like HOME are registered. [If you use (ba)sh or (t)csh, type `echo $HOME`.] I use Mutt and it works fine for me.
You could try creating another user and seeing if it works for them. Aside from that, I'm not sure...
Hello
I checked the home directory and all is fine and I add the user via sysinstall during the installation, but I got a strange error message while installing mysql:
Code:
WARNING: The host 'asgard' could not be looked up with resolveip.
This probably means that your libc libraries are not 100 % compatible
with this binary MySQL version. The MySQL daemon, mysqld, should work
normally with the exception that host name resolving will not work.
This means that you should use IP addresses instead of hostnames
when specifying MySQL privileges !
I'm just wondering if it's not the roots of my problems: the mailer-daemon could have the same problem as mysqld...it seems to be a libc problem does anyone know if I should reinstall it or so on?
Thx
