unknown user error message


hi all

in Fedora Core 2 whenever i am logged in as ordinary user, and when i try to logout or shut down or reboot , i get error message 'Unknown user' and then takes me back to the login screen. only from there i have to either shutdown or reboot.

can anyone pls help me as to what the problem is and is there any remedy ?

did regular user ever work correctly before? and if it did, what did you change that caused this to happen? the solution to this problem isn't evident in a google search, and if you can't figure it out, i would recommend logging in as root and deleting the regular user account and adding a new one. if it's happening on multiple user accounts instead of just one, that's more of a problem.
