Cyrus unknown user

I have sendmail running together with cyrus. I can send and receive mail without any problem. I also have a linux user with the same name.

But when I create a new mailbox in cyrus for someone without creating a linux user it is impossible to connect to the mailbox. I gave this user a password using saslpasswd2.
When I use Squirrelmail to connect to the cyrus usermailbox, i get a message that the user is Unknown. Connecting from outlook fails also. Both Squirrelmail and outlook can connect the the mailbox which also has a linux user.

As soon as I create a linux user with this name connecting to the mailbox succeeds.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
Kees
