freeBSD 4.7 ,could not turn sendmail off

I've install freeBSD 4.7 , it automatic start sendmail at boottime and I did not like that !
I've edited the /etc/rc.conf that : enable_sendmail="NO" or remove all about the sendmail but it still startup at boot time
It tell me that sendmail was the standard deamon , so how could I solve that problem ? ? ?

Have a look at /etc/defaults/rc.conf and try adding the appropriate line.
The suggestion you had from scuzzo84 works on FreeBSD 5.X at least.

it should work since the above poster says its for 5 and I use 4 for freebsd. I have always used that line/setting to disable sendmail. Did you restart your computer and see it still running or what?

Im pretty sure you tried this, but maybe you want to try again as its from the handbook:

22.4.2 Disable sendmail

The procedure used to start sendmail changed significantly between 4.5-RELEASE and 4.6-RELEASE. Therefore, the procedure used to disable it is subtly different.
22.4.2.1 FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE before 2002/4/4 and Earlier (Including 4.5-RELEASE and Earlier)

Enter:

sendmail_enable="NO"

into /etc/rc.conf. This will disable sendmail's incoming mail service, but if /etc/mail/mailer.conf (see below) is not changed, sendmail will still be used to send e-mail.
22.4.2.2 FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE after 2002/4/4 (Including 4.6-RELEASE and Later)

In order to completely disable sendmail you must use

sendmail_enable="NONE"

in /etc/rc.conf.

Warning: If you disable sendmail's outgoing mail service in this way, it is important that you replace it with a fully working alternative mail delivery system. If you choose not to, system functions such as periodic(8) will be unable to deliver their results by e-mail as they would normally expect to. Many parts of your system may expect to have a functional sendmail-compatible system. If applications continue to use sendmail's binaries to try to send e-mail after you have disabled them, mail could go into an inactive sendmail queue, and never be delivered.

If you only want to disable sendmail's incoming mail service, you should set

sendmail_enable="NO"

in /etc/rc.conf. More information on sendmail's startup options is available from the rc.sendmail(8) manual page.

disabled sendmail

Hi,

I know this topic is a little stale now, but just in case you (or anyone) still needs this information:

sendmail will NOT be disabled on the *loopback* interface if using sendmail_enable="NO", as it needs to be running on loopback for outbound mail delivery.

best way to test to if inbound sendmail is nerfed is to 'telnet <real.ip.add.ress> 25'. you should find that sendmail is not bound to the *external* interface.

HTH,
-Alex.
