can't install FreeBSD 5.4 - btx halted

Hello,
I am really new to FreeBSD. I am experienced with Linux and I said that I should give FreeBSD a try.
I tried to install it on a P4 Compaq Avo machine.
The problem is that when I booted using FreeBSD 5.4, I get the "BTX halted" error. It looked something like this:
BTX loader
1.0 BTX version
Then came the value of the CPU registers (I think), and then the message BTX halted.

The boot process didn't continue any more.

What can I do? What is this error?

Thanks,
Ddaas

To begin with 1) do a google search to make sure that your hardware is supported (I would be very surprised if it weren't, but new hardware can cause problems that take time to resolve), 2) make sure you have a good install CD (try another download, order a commercial CD, etc), and 3) try the freesbie -- the live freebsd, 4) try PC-BSD (freebsd with a nice graphical installer similar to anaconda).

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers--

It seems that the hardware is not supported. I tried on other IBM NetVista and everything worked ok.
I think there is a problem with these Compaq (I've tried on 3 Compaq after I downloaded the iso again, check the md5 etc). The same btx halted error after it booted.

You will want to go here to file a bug track on the issue. The freebsd developers would appreciate it. Having all the specs for the model will be appreciated.

Cheers--

Try disabling everything in the BIOS that is not necessary.

// Edit

Quick search on Google found this: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/f...st/000479.html

Quote:
My solution to the BTX halted was to turn of the BIOS IDE DMA Transfers option
in the DeviceOptions menu in the BIOS.
