system really halted?

Hi
after choosing shutdown from the log in menu, computer displayed usual load of kill processes, etc, then system halted.
However, when I hit the power button, it continued to sit there and look at me.
I "solved" this by hitting the system's restart button, then booting into windows, then shutting down from there!
Was I just impatient? [I haven't played with the Linux os for a while...]
This happened in OpenLinux 2.3.

If the last thing printed on the screen was "power down" or "system halted", then you're safe in turning off the computer or restarting. Sometimes Linux doesn't know how to actually turn off the power itself.

Also, if pressing the power button didn't do anything, try holding it in until it powers down (should take 3-4 seconds). And of course if that doesn't work, you can use the power switch on the back or unplug it

you can try loading the apm module for linux to poweroff.

the settings for what the power button does are in cmos, if they exist.
usually there are settings for 5 sec delay, and instant-off
