I am very new to Linux and having a few problems finding my way around.
I had installed Ubuntu version 10.10 within Windows XP.
When Ubuntu starts the desktop will not fit within the monitor window.
I have now upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and have the same problem.
I am using On board graphics adapter from a ASUS motherboard P5S800 - VM.
When running Windows XP on the same computer the only resolutions available are 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768, both 24 bit.
The highest resolution in Ubuntu is 960 x 600, there are a few smaller resolutions to choose from.
Monitor can display many resolutions 1024 x 768 down to 640 x350, the resolution I am trying to display is 1024 x 768.
If I select "Monitor" while in Ubuntu, it does not detect my monitor, the selection is grayed out.
The only resolution it displays is 960 x 600.
Monitor is connected as VGA.
When using the command, x randr -q, it displays the highest resolution as 960 x 600 and has an ASTERIC next to it, does this mean anything?
Is there any way to -
1/ Force Ubuntu to recognise my monitor?
2/ Force a higher resolution?
If so, I would appreciate a step by step explanation of what to do.

For point of clarification, the command should be: xrandr -q, and not x randr -q.
Can you post the output of xrandr -q here please?
Here is a comprehensive tutorial on using xrandr: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution
It looks like you are using 800x600 resolution from your xrandr output. The 1024x768 resolution does not seem to be detected.
See the sections Adding undetected resolutions and Setting XRandR changes persistently in the tutorial I linked to in my last post and see if using that helps: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Res...ed_resolutions
