ubuntu amd64 gnome runs choppy

i recently installed ubuntu amd64 on my acer turion64 laptop and gnome runs choppy on it. some apps take a bit longer to load than they did when i had slackware and suse installed. I checked to see if dma was turned on on my hard driver and it is. Anyone might have an idea of anything else i can check to see why its running so choppy?

Since ubuntu is debian based, it shouldn't be much slower than slack, but maybe check what services you have running and cut down in those. Services can decrease the perfomance quite much.

I would suspect it's your video driver, and if you're using Breezy, maybe the transition to gcc-4.0.
