Hello linuxquestions :-)
I am running ubuntu feisty fawn on a toshiba satellite m30, with an NVidia GeForce FX Go5200 graphics card.
I wanted to try out feisty's new "Desktop Effects", but to do this I had to install an nvidia driver. I did, and it seemed to work fine, so I restarted the computer as it prompted me to and still everything seemed fine. But I have since noticed that if I leave the computer for a long period of time and come back, the blanked screen will not come back, it simply stays black when I move the mouse or press the keyboard.
I have been running linux for quite some time as a server, but have only recently started using it as my main OS.
Could this be due to a small glitch in feisty?
Is there any workaround that you can suggest?
Thanks!
Hi there,
Thanks for the response Redeye2...
I have fixed it now, im not sure which package ubuntu automatically installed for me to try out desktop effects, but I uninstalled it, and installed a different nvidia driver
Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new
And that fixed things up :-)
I think the driver which was automatically installed, was a development driver, which would explain a lot.
Thanks

Hello linuxquestions :-)
i had a somehow related problem , so i take some quote from you
I wanted to try out feisty's new "Desktop Effects", but to do this I had to install an nvidia driver. I did, and it seemed to work fine, so I restarted the computer as it prompted me to and still everything seemed fine. But when i restart the computer ,ubuntu goes in loading till before the login screen .
when the login screen was going to start a black screen is open instead of it and nothing happen after that and i can't access ubuntu anymore .
Well I think that would be because somehow you have uninstalled your nvidia driver...
if it wont start up try pressing ctrl+alt+F1 logging in, and then going
I'm going to watch this thread, because I've been having the same problem. Tried 3d desktop after installing 3d nvidia driver chosen by Synaptic and screen in gnome immediately became all messed up. Removed 3d desktop, 3d nvidia driver and lost all video graphics. Relative newbie here had to try a bunch of things in command line recovery mode to get it all back. One thing I did have to do was figure out, which nvidia 3d driver I needed. There are 3d new and 3d legacy drivers. My GeFORCE 6600 GTOC card requires the legacy card driver it seems as I repeatedly got error messages, when trying the "new" driver. I've gotten my video back now, but the screen resolution vs icon sizes, etc is really wonky. Don't know how to turn it all back to default, so I'm presently getting ready to back everything up and do a fresh reload of feisty. Mahred:- Have you checked if you have or require the new or legacy driver?
Mahred; Got my system up and running in 3D largely by following the info in the following Feisty article. http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_nvidia_feisty
It turns out I did need the newest driver, but for some reason along the way I did something and it wouldn't work for me. There's a link in the article (around pg 3 I think), which will tell you exactly which of the 3 nvidia drivers you need for your card. Also a troubleshooting section towards the end. One happy now.
