nvidia+UXGA+XF86config -- display error after screen blanks

I am running slackware 8.1 on my dell inspiron 8000, 15" UXGA screen, nvidia GeForce2 Go. xfree v.4.2.0

the problem is that after the screen turns off due to inactivity, upon resume there is a slight display error along the lefthand side of the screen. along the entire side, there are a series of small (~1.0 cm) horizontal lines that flash on and off randomly in similar colors to whatever is nearby, if that makes any sense.

I have tried various recommended HorizSync and VertRefresh values. Also, i have the latest nvidia drivers (it did it with the old ones too).

here are relevant sections of XF86Config:

Section "Monitor"

Identifier "My Monitor"
VendorName "Dell"
ModelName "UXGA"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 29.00-76.00
VertRefresh 60
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
VendorName "nvidia"
BoardName "GeForce 2 Go"
Driver "nvidia"
VideoRam 32768
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Are you booting into a frame buffer console?
I was getting artifacts untill I set vga=normal in /etc/lilo.conf.
I'm running slackware 9 on an Aopen 1545 a with geforce2 go chip.

still a newbie, so i'm not sure what exactly "frame buffer console" refers to. i boot in text mode and then use startx to start the gui.
i'll check my lilo.conf for that setting.

thanks,

dan
