internet problem: Firefox can load google, but not any others!

the summary is:
-ping works with all internet adresses
-telnet works with all internet adresses
-browsers (both Firefox and Opera) works only with google (this is the weirdest)
-browsers (both Firefox and Opera) cannot load any other websites
-other high level internet application (example: ubuntu updater) doesn't work
System-> Administration-> Networking brings up Network Settings. Using the connection tab, select Ethernet Connection and then the Properties button. It should indicate DCHP and you won't see the IP parameters in use. The Network Monitor applet should be installed by you in your tool bar panel. Right click it and you will see the IP parameters that have been assigned by DCHP.
I had a problem just like this one Linux Router today. The ADSL Provider just changed its settings, now accepting the clients MRU despite of using a own one. The MRU was set on a much too high value of 2400. That resultet in the following kernel message:
