Connecting To Internet

I am a newbie in Ubuntu. I have recently installed it on my laptop and I am quite excited to use this. However, I cant locate an application or utility which would allow me to dial-up an internet service provider. How do I do it? Is there a similar utility like in Windows?

Pls HELP! Thank you. God bless!

Well what type of file is it?

If it's a tar then right click on the package where ever it was downloaded to. Read the read me and that should tell you the proper fashion of installing this program.

If you have any other questions then please post so that we can help you. Being a newbie to unix can be daunting at first but it gets easier.

Yes, its a TAR file, Brian. I opened the install file andread the instructions but after typing the first command "./configure" the system was looking for something more. I am lost. I liked the new OS but it seems its giving me hard time to have me keep up and running.

Will someone tell me how to install this GNome PPP? Pls give me the detailed step-by-step instructions. Pls bear with me. I am a newbie.

Thank you and God bless!

But I thought PPP is installed by default in Ubuntu. Atleast for me. Check in System/Administration/Networking. Can also be done from command line, but I cannot remember the commands off head.

As of now you cannot compile whatever source you d/l because the compiler is not installed by default. Get your dialup working, then you can install the compiler. Thats when you will be able to compile anything.

You will not even be able to use Synaptic Manager until you get on-line.

I hope this helps.

<<Will it be better if I re-intall Ubuntu? Could it be possible that I missed some of the options when I installed it? I used the expert mode so I can have my WinXP intact on my hard drive.>>

Re-installing doesn't take long. Just do it using the default option. Afterall your XP will remain intact.

Should I backup my XP files first before I reintall in default mode? I dont have big backup media and so trying it without backing up is very risky. But if you say its okay, "after all XP will remain intact", let me try it.

The CD installer from Ubuntu is saying that installing in default mode will erase contents of the disk.

What should I do? Thanks for all the help.

Yes, you must backup as a routine - but only your user files. But you wouldnt backup system files, just make sure you have windows installation CD - just in case.

As for erasing hard disk during default installation of Ubuntu, I think it is referring to the partition you are installing in, not the whole disk. I may be corrected if I am wrong.

I, personally havent had a single problem with disk erasure in the several installations I have done.

Try, but be cautious. Good luck.

Thanks, AtinLango. I was able to reinstall using default, AND without touching my XP. However, there is no Gnome PPP in the CD. I tried using "Add Packages" or even the Synaptic Package Manager to no avail. Sorry for my ignorance.

Can anybody help me?

I have the downloaded Gnome PPP copied to my Home folder. How do I define this in the Settings/Repositories? I cant install the program. PLS HELP!!

I tried the instructions at the readme. And executed ./configure but does not work too. S.O.S.!! HELP !!!

Thank you.

Now I am kind of like you dtariman just farther along. Laptop thing and everything matches except I use wireless dsl. I am one of the lucky ones whoes hardware worked out of the box but I think you can connect without gnomeppp. Go to system/admidistrasion/networking and configure and connect the modem connection. it might be you need a driver for your modem if it dosen't show up. I stopped using dial-up a long time ago so I can't help with configuration.
