Maybe "updatedb" then "locate azureus" would help. You may also have a .azureus directory under your home directory that optional plugins and other user configureable options go. As a direct answer to your question "where does apt-get place programs", well, that is sometimes specific to the individual package, so it can be a hard question to answer, but you can always open up synaptic and look at the installed files section while the package is selected as that will show all files installed and their path. I know there is a command line option for apt-get that will show this, but I do not know it by heart, as I have never used that particular option.
